Film: 25th Hour

Screenplay by: David Benioff

One of the greatest endings ever. The most remarkable sequence in 25th Hour, comes at the very end: as Mr. Brogan (the father) drives Monty (the protagonist) to prison, he urges him to escape: we get an extended sequence, with Mr. Brogan’s voiceover imagining it, depicting something entirely counterfactual to what is actually happening in the film.

This fantasy sequence of a perfect life, poised on the edge of inexistence  give us hope for the protagonist. The sense of regret and the longing for a new lift he’ll never have is heavy and completely satisfying. This film is also the first and most endearing cinematic representation of 9/11.
